I have been a judicial officer for nearly a decade. In both my capacity as a Superior Court Commissioner and now as a Superior Court Judge, I have handled criminal, civil, and family law matters.  During my tenure as a judicial officer, I have presided over thousands and thousands of cases ensuring all litigants who appear in my courtroom are treated fairly and equally.

Prior to my appointment to the Superior Court, I went through an extensive vetting process.  First, I filled out a detailed 25 page application which required me to list all of my significant cases, the lawyers I opposed, and the judges I appeared in front of.  I also provided details regarding my work history as well as my family background. I was required to sign a release so the Governor's Office could speak to all individuals listed in my application.  After the application was reviewed by the Governor's Office and found compelling, it was then submitted to the Judicial Nominees Evaluation Commission which is an independent statewide organization.  This Commission submitted confidential questions to hundreds of San Diego attorneys asking for their input regarding my intellect, fairness, demeanor, and experience.  I was also interviewed by members of the Commission.  Based on the information collected, an evaluation was submitted to the Governor's office.  After being interviewed by the Governor's appointment's secretary, I was honored to receive the Governor's appointment to the Superior Court bench.

As an attorney, I served the public with distinction for more than 20 years. My career began as a San Diego Deputy City Attorney, prosecuting hundreds of criminal cases including several jury trials. I later handled complex civil trial matters in both the state and federal courts. I was promoted to several leadership positions within the City Attorney’s Office eventually becoming the Assistant City Attorney in charge of the entire civil division of the office. Prior to leaving the City Attorney’s office, I served as the Chief Legal Advisor for Mayor Jerry Sanders. I have been honored with a number of awards including the Certified Family Law Specialists “Judicial Officer Recognition Award,” the City’s Partnership Award, and a Mayoral proclamation of “Keri Katz Day” in the City. I have been married to my husband for over 29 years and I have two children.
