Biography

A native San Diegan, Kyle was first inspired by the impact of local government when he interned in the Council District 1 office in 2010. Ever since, Kyle has dedicated his life to public service and improving the communities of the First Council District. Kyle has either lived, attended school or worked in the district over the past six years. He obtained a degree in Environmental Systems with a focus in Environmental Policy from UC San Diego and environmental sustainability is one of his greatest passions.

The lack of affordable housing and alternative transportation options in District 1 are Kyle's top priorities. As a hopeful future homeowner, he wants to ensure that there will be affordable places to live that are located near quality jobs with easy options to get to work.

As a prominent student leader in the UC San Diego Community, Kyle played an active role in developing projects across the campus. Some of the many roles he held at UCSD included a Planning Associate with Physical & Community Planning, an Operations Assistant for Government Relations, and the Director of Transportation Policy for the Associated Students in addition to sitting on a variety of campus planning and land use committees. He worked on multi-million dollar landscape projects, installed community art spaces, pushed for an update of UCSD's climate action plan and constantly helped to empower other young leaders.

One of Kyle's proudest achievements was successfully implementing an overhaul of the student transit program, the new Triton U-Pass. He negotiated directly with Metropolitan Transit System officials and developed the $20 million five year proposal that secured overwhelming approval by a student vote. Thanks largely to his efforts, the UCSD Triton U-Pass program gives 31,000 undergraduate and graduate students unlimited access to all bus and light rail routes in the San Diego region until 2019 with the option to renew the contract in five years.

Kyle currently serves as Council President Lightner's representative to University City and as the liaison to the University Community Planning Group and the University City Community Association (UCCA). He is also a policy advisor on infrastructure and transportation issues.

Kyle is excited to combine his experience as a City Council Representative and knowledge of City Hall with a fresh new perspective as the next Councilmember for District 1.
