Political Beliefs

I was a liberal for 30 years years, until I realized: you will run out of other people's money unless you stick to a budget and encourage businesses to grow and flourish.

THEN spend public money WISELY, slowly, carefully on social issues. I am now a conservative Republican (make that a capitol C conservative.)

I intend to watch Chico's budget like a hawk. Making sure we never get so close to bankcrupcy again. If you are a taxpayer of this city you can rest assured that I will spend the hours and hours necessary going over every agenda, every burgetary report and help the city council: 1)  to encourage businesses big and small to succeed in this city.

2) make sure priorities are in place to keep enough police, fire and staff to keep familys safe.

3) spend money we do have to maintain our city, parks and roads once again.

Loretta Ann Torres

Member, City Council City of Chico

Age: 73

I grew up in Chico, graduated from Chico High, and attended Chico State, with the goal of becoming a math teacher, instead I married a farmer and moved one county away.

I did the accounting, the payroll and the budgets for our family partnerships and one corporation.

I watched as Chico’s City Council made choices I disagreed with: less business growth, higher taxes, less revenue, and unaccounted for spending.

After I moved back to Chico and my husband died; I decided that I could direct my focus to setting Chico on a firm financial footing. I have the time and the focus to do so.

I taught Sunday school for 38 years and wrote a book about my husband’s rare illness. I hope to persuade others that nurturing businesses and helping those less fortunate go hand and hand with a balanced budget.

My background: Farmer, businesswoman, teacher, author and caregiver, with the added bonus: I have seven grandchildren living within a 10 mile radius of Chico; and a burning desire to keep the Chico I love, intact for them.
