I'm running for school board because I want to see every child at every school in our community be given the tools, the opportunities and the experience they need to craft their best future.

We are very fortunate in Ventura to have strong schools which provide great diversity of learning opportunities for our students.  But like all things in our society, education is changing very rapidly. The skills that students will need to be successful in the future include: a strong foundation in reading, math and science; technology skills that can be built upon as technology changes; the ability to work well with a diverse group of people; and the ability to adapt to new challenges.   Our schools will need a board that understands this new dynamic and can help to create a vision to achieve this for all students, regardless of their circumstances.

Over the last 10 years, I have had the opportunity to work daily with teachers, staff, administrators and volunteers to develop road-maps for student success.   I helped create and implement the districts multi-million dollar Technology Plan, the Arts and Music Master Plan and helped determine the district‚Äôs priorities through the Local Control and Accountability Plan.  In addition, I currently advise the district as a member of the Parent Advisory Council and the Parcel Tax Oversight Committee.

As the parent of two current VUSD students, I can tell you that the education that our schools provide is critical to our community‚Äôs future.  We must ensure that every child is given the best chance at a success by focusing on reading at grade level in elementary school, through reduced class sizes and by providing resources to those students that are falling behind.  We need to create pathways for all students, not just those bound for college, to provide skills and training to help them be contributing members of our community.  And, we must invest in teacher training and support for our staff, so that teachers can use their enthusiasm and experience to motivate and engage our youth.

Education of our community's youth is critical to building a successful future for the citizens of Ventura.   We need our young people to be challenged to think, encouraged to evolve and grow, and empowered to take action in the global and local community.
