Background and Education:

I am John Stevens, a resident of Martinez, who moved here because of the friendly people, beauty of the city and rich history. Martinez embraces diversity and has the potential for a prosperous future.

I see several attributes necessary to be a good councilperson. An education relative to the skills needed as a city councilmember is invaluable to be an effective leader. Mine includes:

  • Master’s in Public Administration
  • Certification in Legislative Studies
  • Bachelor’s in English

Second is experience. As the CEO of the Martinez Chamber of Commerce, I promoted economic development. Supporting small business and strengthening Martinez have been the cornerstones of my service. I created Studios on the Streets, a family oriented event, and advocated for more transit, including service for seniors and the disabled.

I am a former board member of the Human Rights Campaign and have advocated for healthcare around breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and equal rights for the less fortunate.

A former small business owner, I understand the importance of good policy to attract businesses and help them succeed and create jobs for our labor force. Currently, I serve as COO of a medical research policy institute promoting best practices in emergency room services.

If elected, I will focus on:

  • An infrastructure master plan for the waterfront

  • Sound Budgeting
  • Protecting Public Safety
  • Increased code enforcement
  • Affordable residential development
