Experience

Biography

A doctorally-prepared nurse leader, advance practice registered nurse, educator, and a wife. As a relative newcomer to the political scene, you may ask why Tavonia is running. As 14 year resident of Carson, California she is assionate about what goes on in the city. As a registered nurse, infection control expert and teacher, she believe's strongly that there is more that can be done to protect the health of the residents of Carson.

Tavonia has quickly established herself as a leading voice on healthcare policy and patient advocacy.  Tavonia was recently honored and named as nursing's 40 under 40 by the National Black Nurses Association. She has also served on numerous Committees such as health & wellness, social media, infection prevention/control, and public policy and procedure and is now proud to serve on several ubcommittees: Health, Energy and Power, and Communications and Technology. In each of these subcommittees, Tavonia proudly works to support improved patient care and improve our communities overall well-being.

Tavonia's compassion for her city is a the driving force behind her decision to run for City Council. Currently she serves as a advanced registered nurse, and nursing leader for over eleven years—initially as a medical surgical nurse and then Trauma ER, and finally as an infectious disease practitioner. She never saw herself as a politician, nor dreamed that she would be elected to local office, but felt the call to action as she saw residents in her community dying and suffering disproportionately of cancer and various forms of health inequities.  Long before Tavonia's decision to run for office, she was an advocate for her patients and the comunity served. Tavonia's end goal is to : to improve the lives and opportunities of the residents of Carso and to work each day to honorably represent the voice of the voiceless. Originally born in Jamaica and raised in Los Angeles, Tavonia received her nursing degree from LA Trade Technical College and she then went on to further her studies to a terminal degree in nursing. Tavonia and her husband Tim moved to Carson shortly after they married and have resided in Carson ever since. - See more at: tavoniaekwegh.com

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

Having dissatisfaction in the local political system has impacted my political involvement to speak out. Political activism or “buy in” includes an increased awareness of the issues, learning the political language in the city. Tavonia believes in leading the way through initiation of public policy ideas that benefit the larger public good. The public will benefit from Tavonia's expertise and the advocacy that she can provide on behalf of the public. There are no actions, without difficulty. She equates this to a formula, “witness + honesty + speaking out = the right thing to do”. Tavonia's current involvement as an advocate for the community has involved countless struggles involving the current political climate,  the need for action-based research, and the frustration of being silenced.
