Biography

Andy grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, graduated from MIT in 1990 with a BS in Architecture.   She has worked in construction, planning and architecture since then, first in Atlanta and then Los Angeles. When she and her husband Frank Basich looked for the best place to raise their two daughters, they chose San Luis Obispo and moved here in 1997.

Andy’s work and volunteer history in San Luis Obispo is extensive.

She worked at RRM Design Group from 1997 to 2004, then left to start her own firm focused on green building, eventually joining forces with fellow architect Jennifer Rennick to establish In Balance Green Consulting in 2008.  Their firm has helped scores of clients regionally and throughout California, creating projects that are energy efficient, healthy, cost effective and gentle on the planet.

A graduate of Leadership SLO Class XXIV, Andy has been very active in the city’s civic life, frequently serving in a leadership role.

In 2014, she co-chaired the SLO Citizens for Measure G (renewal of the half-cent sales tax), which voters overwhelmingly approved 70% to 30%.

Andy currently serves on the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and sits on its Legislative Action Committee.

She also sits on the Central Coast Green Building Council’s Board of Directors, serves on the Green Schools Committee, and co-founded the American Institute of Architect’s Zero Net Energy Task Force. She was a founding Board Member of SLO Green Build.

Among other activities, Andy volunteers at her daughters’ schools, the Y, 350.org, AYSO, Homeless Overflow, and I Madonnari/Via dei Colori.

Andy is a fair-weather bike commuter who also enjoys hiking, walks with the family dog, cooking for friends and family, visiting the Central Coast’s many fine wine and food establishments, and watching lots of soccer games.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

I love this city and am excited about our future!  I believe in local government as a way for residents to truly influence decision-making and outcomes.  At the local level, government can be creative, agile and responsive, and good solutions can ripple to other communities and beyond.

My vision for San Luis Obispo is one of balance:

A healthy economy, where businesses succeed and employees thrive; environmental stewardship, to protect our beautiful surroundings and resources; and livable community, making sure a great quality of life is available to everyone.

We do have challenges ahead and I believe we can address those challenges together. I will prioritize policies and programs to improve housing options and affordability, promote a sustainable water supply, encourage head-of-household jobs, and implement climate action.

Our community is strengthened by different backgrounds and opinions. We need a City Council that listens carefully, and is fiscally responsible; a Council that honors our past, while planning courageously for the future.
