Alan is a husband and proud father of two young boys in Davis elementary schools. He came to Davis in 1993 to attend the University of California, Davis (UCD) as an undergraduate. While at UCD, Alan met his wife, Lia, a ‘Davis girl’ who attended Davis public schools from preschool through college. They graduated from UCD in 1997, but Lia still sometimes jokes that Alan is new to the community. After college, Alan earned his law degree and worked as an attorney and policy advocate specializing in the legislative process and governmental affairs. Today, Alan is the Executive of a non-profit corporation relating to finance and local government.

Throughout his over twenty years in Davis, Alan has devoted himself to community service. Highlights of his work in Davis schools include:

  • DJUSD School Board Trustee
  • Birch Lane Elementary School Site Council
  • Superintendent's Advisory Committee on Special Education
  • Classroom volunteer

In addition to his service in the educational arena Alan has volunteered in a wide array of community efforts, including:

  • Member of the Davis Redevelopment Commission Oversight Board;
  • Chairman and Member of the City of Davis Business and Economic Development Commission;
  • Board Member of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame;
  • Founding Board Member of the California Bicycle Museum;
  • Public Art Advocate and Project Facilitator for a public art memorial at the Davis Public Library;
  • Volunteer Yolo County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate);
  • Coach, Davis Little League

Alan has a broad range of professional work experience having worked in both the private and public sector. He has published on effective government advocacy including a Law Review Article on the topic of Ethics in Government and is occasionally requested to speak publicly on these topics. In addition, Alan has served as a pro-bono attorney on multiple occasions, particularly in capacities representing parents or organizations interacting with public schools.

The son of Dennis and Linda Fernandes, also of Davis, Alan grew up in the Bay Area attending public school. His family moved to Sacramento in his teenage years where he eventually graduated from Christian Brothers High School, a school whose motto ‘Enter to Learn; Leave to Serve’ made an indelible impression on him. Alan began serving and giving back to Christian Brothers by coaching the High School Freshman Baseball Team, as well as many Moot Court Teams, leading one team to a first place finish. He participated in the Judge Gordon D. Schaber High School Law Program and Moot Court Competition on behalf of Christian Brothers as both an attorney coach and judge.
