Hot Lunch Co-Chair, Santa Rita PTA (2006–2007)

Our family has lived in the Crossings of Mountain View for 11 years and in the Bay Area for 23 years. Our children currently attend Los Altos High School and previously attended Bullis Charter School, Santa Rita, and Loyola.

I am a public school success story, being the first in my family to graduate from college. I attended public schools in Pennsylvania through my graduation from Penn State University with a BS in Biochemistry. I moved to California to pursue my PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley. My life was shaped by the value and opportunity of strong public schools.

My career at Stanford began with my post-doctoral research in computational structural biology with Nobel Laureate, Professor Michael Levitt. After teaching myself how to code and eventually managing a Top 500 Supercomputer, I chose to support top scientists as a Manager then the Associate Director of IT of the Bio-X Interdisciplinary Institute at Stanford’s James H. Clark Center.

Since 2013, I have served as the Associate Director for Operations and Programs for the Stanford Neurosciences Institute. I built and lead the team that is designing and implementing the programs and facilities for the Institute. I am responsible and accountable for a multi-million dollar budget and am a key contributor to the design and operations of the planned new 235,000 sq.ft Research Complex.  The goal of the Institute is to engage researchers from diverse fields to work collaboratively to expand our understanding of the brain and behavior. Its success requires collaboration across many complex organizations. As with LASD, relationships are essential to its success.

My skills have translated well in my contributions to Los Altos School District’s mission.  It was always a priority for my husband, Matt, and me to actively support our children’s educational programs from reading and volunteering in the classroom to chaperoning field trips, choir and drama performances.  I first became involved at the District level as a community organizer during the school attendance boundary adjustments in 2007.  Most recently, I served as the appointed Greater San Antonio Community Association representative alongside a diverse group of school and community volunteers on the LASD Facilities Master Plan Committee. I also served as Santa Rita’s hot lunch Co-Chair and as the Director of Communications on the Bullis Charter School parent teacher organization.  For many years, I served as Den Leader for Cub Scout Pack 74 and currently am an activity coordinator and board of review member for Boy Scout Troop 33.

I believe that all students deserve an excellent public education. LASD’s children must develop skills necessary to not only succeed in our rapidly changing and dynamic world, but also to actively shape our community for the better. I believe in the interconnectedness of our neighborhoods within our school district community, and our local community within our towns, the county, state and the world. As a District Trustee I will have a responsibility and accountability to our students, teachers, district staff, taxpayers and all members of our community.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

Preparing our students for tomorrow’s dynamic workplace begins with an outstanding Kinder - 8th grade foundation today.  As the Associate Director of the Stanford Neurosciences Institute, I am passionate about education and have what it takes to ensure that our schools continue to excel and evolve.  It takes the ability to work collaboratively, identify short and longer term priorities and then implement on time and on budget.  As an active parent volunteer and member of the LASD’s Facilities Master Planning Committee, I am committed to support LASD to effectively address key issues over the next few years.

As a Trustee, my main goals will be to:

  1. Bring a fresh perspective leveraging my community involvement, professional experience and forward-thinking vision to ensure a great education for all of our kids
  2. Put program needs at the forefront of district decisions, including the best use of Measure N funds
  3. Build cooperative relationships between LASD and our wider communities

Our family has been fortunate to be part of several Los Altos school communities, giving me a unique and broad perspective. I first became involved with Los Altos School District as a community organizer during the school attendance boundary adjustments in 2007. Most recently, I was an appointed member of the LASD Facilities Master Plan Committee that was charged with recommending how to implement the $150 Million Measure N bond funding.

I look forward to working with you to tackle pressing issues and enact forward-thinking plans for our district.
