Biography

Matt Nguyen is the son of Vietnam War refugees, an Orange County native, a graduate of Huntington Beach public schools, a former aide to the California Governor, and a constitutional rights advocate for kids. Learn more about Matt at www.mattnguyen.com.

Matt's parents fled Vietnam as child refugees at the height of the Vietnam War. Arriving in America with minimal English and only pennies to their name, they bounced between resettlement camps before making California their home. Through their own perseverance and the support of generous social programs that gave them the opportunity to succeed, Matt's parents built a better life for themselves and their families.

Born and raised in Huntington Beach and Garden Grove, and grateful for his parents’ sacrifices, Matt has dedicated his career to empowering children, families, and communities through policy advocacy and civil rights litigation.

As an aide to Governor Jerry Brown, Matt fought to promote sustained investment in California’s world-class UC, CSU, and community college systems, champion local public school educators, and improve K-12 school funding. Matt endorsed bipartisan legislation to protect California's Dreamers as a member of Senator Kamala Harris' transition team. He recently advised the ACLU of Southern California in a groundbreaking $150 million settlement for public school students. Today, Matt directs a nonprofit education rights clinic that represents students and families in landmark civil rights cases challenging racial segregation in public schools and defending their right to an education.

Matt is a proud alumnus of OC public schools, including Edison High, Sowers Middle, and Peterson Elementary. He attended the University of California, Berkeley and Yale Law School, the only Vietnamese American student in his graduating class. Matt volunteers for local OC Boy Scout Troop 319, where he was an Eagle Scout.
