Political Philosophy

I believe in a community college system that puts the students and teachers first and foremost. We currently have a system with individuals who have been in office up to 20 years that is in need of repair.

No community college in the San Diego system has a graduation or transfer rate of over 40%. Two of them are not even above 30%. Furthermore teacher salaries have gone down for three years straight while bureaucratic costs and "secret salaries" have skyrocketed.

The purpose of Community College is to prepare students for one of two outcomes; 1) Prepare them to transfer to a four year university or college. 2) Give them the education and training so that when they graduate they have a degree and can take on a profession. For too many years neither of these goals have been met.

My focus is to direct the Community Colleges to provide classes tailored to the jobs that are in demand now, ones that can provide people with a good paying jobs and the ability to grow into their careers. It is to ensure that Community College courses meet the needs of the major universities and are taught in a fashion that students can transfer effectively to a university if they need.

It is to get costs under control by opening up construction costs to all qualified candidates who can provide the best service at the lowest cost and by slashing bureaucracy that is choking the budget. And finally it is to increase teacher and councilor salaries so they get the support they need, while exposing and tamping down on the secret salaries taking up a larger and larger portion of our budget.
