SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT

Board of Trustees – District E

DAVID ALVAREZ

San Diego City Councilmember

My public education, from preschool to college, has given me the opportunity to be successful.

Now, as I end my term on the San Diego City Council, I want to give back to my community by serving on the San Diego Community College District Governing Board.

I was the first in my family to go to college and if I can accomplish that, so can anyone. My parents were immigrants with a 3rd grade education and worked minimum wage jobs trying to achieve the American dream. They understood the value of education which is why I know college is for everyone.

If you are a recent high school graduate who is looking to transfer to a four year college, or an adult who wants to learn a new skill to get a better job, our San Diego Community Colleges are for you.

High school students: You will be automatically accepted to the college of your choice. Your first 2 years of college will be tuition Free.

I will work to guarantee Every student receives the proper counseling for their chosen academic or career path. This will require a strengthened relationship with all high school counselors and teachers.

Adults: Continuing Education offers classes to anyone in your family to gain or improve their skills to have access to new opportunities. These classes are already Free to enroll in.

The options in Continuing Education are many, there is truly something for everyone.

Unfortunately, not enough people know about them. I will establish community relationships to market these programs. Utilizing community organizations we will get the word out to future Adult students that are already looking for opportunities, but for some reason don’t know what our colleges have to offer.

The San Diego Community Colleges will be a pathway for Every student in high school and for Any adult who is looking for an opportunity.

I have had an amazing opportunity to serve the community I grew up in on the San Diego City Council. I have fought non-stop for the families that I represent. It is this experience that I will bring with me on the College Board to accomplish one main priority: College for Everyone. Because no matter who you are or where you come from, going to college will make a difference in your life.

I am the only candidate endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers.

I respectfully ask for your vote to the San Diego Community College District Governing Board.
