My Top 3 Priorities

  • 1. Building prosperity for our students is my top priority. I have made it my mission in life to fight for economic empowerment opportunities for our community. That would be no different as a trustee on the college board!
  • 2. Providing a fighting chance for those who have fallen through the cracks! Whether it be aged out foster youth, homeless San Diegans, or individuals returning to society, community colleges can be the key to a successful future!
  • 3. Championing a climate friendly campus environment. I will fight for energy efficient buildings, bicycle friendly campuses and climate literate students!

Biography

Economic Empowerment

August 28, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It was here that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s gave his “I have a dream speech.” When Rafael realized that events were scheduled across the country to “Let Freedom Ring” for this occasion and San Diego had nothing planned, he took action to organize an event at the Jacobs Center. It was through the research and planning for this event that Rafael was inspired by the spirit of Dr. King’s speech that day. Beyond equal rights, Dr. King outlined a future based on economic empowerment. It was at that moment that Rafael realized what his mission in life was. All the work he had done in education, business and in the spirit of service had been to promote and advance economic empowerment. With certainty of his core purpose in life this would serve as the gauge for all future endeavors. It was based on these guiding principles that Rafael responded to the opportunity to declare his candidacy for Community College Trustee.
