My name is Shawn Kumagai and I humbly ask for your support in my campaign for Dublin City Council. I’m a committed service member of 17 years*, son of a first-generation immigrant, guardian to my younger brother, Kevin, and a committed partner to my fiance, Alex. I’m running for city council because I want to ensure Dublin remains a safe and accessible community for people of many backgrounds to come together to live, work, and play.

I feel very fortunate to live in Dublin. Two years ago, when I was returning from a deployment, I spent a lot of time considering where to settle and raise my younger brother. I decided to make Dublin my home because of the great schools, close community, and proximity to my extended family in the Bay Area. Currently, I work as an instructional design consultant for PG&E. My brother is a Sophomore at Dublin High School and an active member of the Sea Cadets, Rear Admiral C.W. Parks Battalion.

I’m a third-generation veteran. My mother served in the Army Nurse Corps, my grandfather served during World War II in the Army Air Corps, and my uncle is an Air Force Academy graduate. I have served the past 17 years in the United States Navy (10 years active duty and 7 years in the reserves) as a linguist. Currently I have the privilege of serving as a Master Chief Petty Officer in the Navy Reserve and am assigned to an intelligence unit right here at Camp Parks. It has been the honor of my lifetime to serve alongside some of our nation’s finest women and men.

Early in my military career I attended the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in Monterey, California where I received an Associate of Arts in Chinese Mandarin. While serving on Active Duty, I completed my Bachelors Degree by attending school part-time and then went on to get a Masters of Instructional Science and Technology at CSU Monterey Bay. My areas of expertise are in adult learning, training, and professional development. My recent military assignments include training management at United States Central Command and United States Cyber Command.

Dublin is an incredible place with so much to be proud of. Our tight-knit, diverse community, excellent schools, rich traditions, and active citizens make it the place my family and I are fortunate to call home.  It has been the honor of my life to serve our country as a member of our armed services. It would be a privilege to take on the tough issues to serve and improve the lives of all Dubliners at City Hall. On Council, I will ensure that police, fire, and other first responders have all they need to keep Dublin safe. I will work to complete our Downtown, attract new retail, support small business, and build regional partnerships to bring future jobs in tech, trades, services, and management to our city. I will champion equitable development and ensure Dubliners get our fair share for infrastructure funding and traffic relief. I’ve taken a “clean money pledge” because I believe in transparency. Dublin has exciting potential and limitless opportunities. Let’s get to work and build the Dublin that every Dubliner deserves. I am supported by small business owners, the Alameda County Firefighters Association, parents, and local elected officials. I humbly ask for your vote.
