Questions & Answers

Questions from League of Women Voters of Oakland (3)

Describe measures you would take to address the issue of homelessness in Oakland?
Answer from Saied Karamooz:

With regard to providing housing for the currently homeless residents, I would take the following discrete, actionable, and measurable steps:

1)    Short Term (2-6 weeks).  Meet the immediate needs (i.e., hygiene, wellness, safety, storage, and mailing address) of our homeless residents,

2)    Medium Term (within 180 days).  Provide humane (i.e., converted containers, NOT Tuff Sheds & Port-a-Potties) temporary housing in 6-8 locations (with 300-400 residents per location) with full navigation services at each site,

3)    Medium Term (within 180 days).  I would earmark funding for no-interest loans to at-risk households so that they can pay for back rent, utilities bills, or past due taxes to prevent eviction, and

4)    Long Term (within 24 months).  Embark on a housing construction initiative to provide affordable homes (for rent or purchase) to low-income families.

How would you address the problem of adequate funding of public employee pensions?
Answer from Saied Karamooz:

I would initiate a collaborative dialog with the labor unions and work through an objective, equitable, and viable approach to restore the adequate level of funding for city employees pensions.  This is a problem that has been neglected for years and should be addressed immediately to safeguard against further deterioration.

There are structural problems in the way buildings are inspected in Oakland.  How would you go about changing the fire and building inspection programs to ensure that inspections are completed?
Answer from Saied Karamooz:

I have met with members of the fire departmentand sought their advice on ways to address the weaknesses of our current fire and building inspection processes.  Furthermore, as an owner of a commercial property in downtown Oakland, I have had firsthand experience with the inefficient, ineffective, and inconsistent building and fire inspections.  As such, I would work with both the fire department and representatives from the residential and commercial building owners and occupantsto ensure a comprehensive, disciplined, and practical program to ensure safety of all buildings in Oakland, particularly those with higher occupancy or greater risk.

Steadfast commitment to ending police brutality in Oakland and dispelling the false narrative that violent crime rates (homicides, aggrevated assaults, and rapes) in Oakland are down since 2014.
