My Top 3 Priorities

  • Workforce retention: One of my top priorities will be to collaborate with Board members, the Superintendent and the MPUSD community to find creative solutions that boost retention.
  • Outdoor Science School for All 5th Graders: This camp a transformative experience for those fifth graders who are able to raise enough funds to attend. I'd like to see ALL of our MPUSD 5th graders attend this camp, regardless of their ability to pay.
  • Active Bodies, Healthy Minds: Studies show that physical activity improves mental health, academic behavior and cognitive ability in children. Recess is not enough. All of our kids should be getting PE every school day.

Biography

I grew up in southern California and attended public schools from kindergarten through high school. I started college at a community college and then transferred to UC Santa Barbara to complete my bachelor's degree in aquatic biology. I attended Oregon State University for my doctorate in oceanography, but transitioned to a career in academic libraries after I finished my post-doctoral position. We moved from Oregon to Monterey so I could pursue the absolute best job in the world (for me): being a marine science librarian for Stanford University at Hopkins Marine Station.

I started working in libraries because even though I loved science and oceanography, I wasn't passionate about my work. Something was missing. Now, as a librarian, I have an opportunity to help someone every day. My duties range from finding an obscure reference to showing someone how to use our 3D printers, from planning a complex digitization project for legacy oceanographic data to reshelving books. I organize evening lectures for the public, and show graduate students how to set up a tidy spreadsheet. Every day is different, every day I am learning, and every day I am helping. I couldn't think of anything I'd rather be doing as a career.

In my spare time, I love to be outside, or working with my hands, or both. This past spring I built a chicken coop, and I'll spend the fall and winter clearing space for a garden, building a new fence, and putting in raised beds. Most of our family time is also spent outside - at the beach, hiking local trails, or just playing in the yard.
