Biography

Balaji Venkatraman has been a resident of San Jose since 1996, living in the Evergreen Area since 2003.

Balaji has been a very active volunteer at Evergreen schools. He volunteered in Carolynn Clark as an Arts Attack Docent, ABC Reading, Junior Achievement and coach for Odyssey of the Mind  (2008-2012). He also served in the School Site Council and District Advisory Council (DAC) from 2005-2011 (resigned from both on being appointed as Trustee of the Board). At Quimby Oak Middle school, Balaji introduced several extra-curricular activities, including, Odyssey of the Mind, Book Nook (a teacher led book club for interested students), Science Olympiad.

Balaji’s passion for education extends beyond his service as a volunteer and Trustee of EESD. He has taught graduate level courses in Network Security and Distributed Systems in the Computer Engineering department of Santa Clara University as Adjunct Faculty from 1998-2003; he is currently teaching similar courses in the Electrical Engineering Department,  San Jose State University from 2007. In Fall 2018, Balaji will be teaching courses in Cyber security and Network Security.

Balaji’s other passion is community service. With other volunteers from Chinmaya Mission, San Jose, Balaji prepares breakfast at the EHC Life Builders James Boccardo Reception Center every month. He also coordinates the distribution of sleeping bags to the homeless at EHC Life Builder shelters each winter.

Balaji also served as a Governing Board Member of the Santa Clara Homeless Health Care Advisory Board (SCC HAAB). This board oversees the delivery of healthcare and other health related services to the homeless brethren in Santa Clara County.

Balaji has also served as Membership Director, Boy Scouts of America,  Jan 2014-April 2015.  Coyote Creek District serves the City of Milpitas south into East San Jose in the communities of Alum Rock, Berryessa, Evergreen, Silver Creek, west to Monterey Highway including a good portion of downtown San Jose, including the neighborhoods of Naglee Park and Japan town. Coyote Creek District has over 100 Scouting units with 2,500 plus members.

Balaji and his wife, Ranjini, have two boys, who attended our local public schools, Quimby Oak Middle School and Carolyn A Clark Elementary. Balaji’s parents also live with him, providing a role model for the grandchildren.

In addition to working as a Technology Executive in one of the top 10 software companies in the world, or otherwise occupied in the various Board or community activities, Balaji loves to spend time with his sons, usually driving them to various classes (math, music, etc.) or sporting activities, biking around the neighborhood or hiking in Montgomery hills near Evergreen Community College.

Balaji feels blessed to have a loving family and considers the support of his family to be the foundation and inspiration that enables his participation in his community and civic activities.
