Biography

 

Martha Deutsch was appointed to the Torrance Unified School Board in December 2012, elected in November 2013 and served as Board President December 2015 to December 2016 . She has taught after school programs for Spanish language at Riviera Elementary School and has also worked as a Spanish bilingual assistant for the District. She has lived in Torrance since 1994.

 

Martha has volunteered thousands of hours in many capacities in two PTA units. She was an Adventures In Art Docent, Room Parent, ELL Program assistant, Honorary Service Awards Chairperson, Executive Vice President and President for Riviera Elementary School. Martha has served as the Reflections Chairperson, Registration Chairperson, Parliamentarian, Executive Vice President and President for South High School. She has also served as a member of the WASC accreditation process for South High School. At the school level Martha served on 2 different School Site Councils. Martha was a recipient of PTA’s Honorary Service Award three times. She also received the California State 66th Assembly District “Women of Distinction” award in 2017.

 

In addition to serving at the individual school sites, she has been on the Board of Directors for the Torrance Council of PTAs as Director of Health, Director of Community Services, Director of Organization and Programs, Executive Vice President and President. Martha has also served as a board member on the Torrance Education Foundation and a member of the ExxonMobil Community Advisory Panel.

 

Martha continues her PTA advocacy today by serving as the Thirty-Third District PTA President. Thirty-Third District PTA consists of 19 PTA councils, including Torrance Council of PTAs. She also recently served on the California State PTA Board of Directors as Chairman of the District Presidents and is currently on the California State PTA Board of Managers serving on the Family Engagement Commission and Student Involvement Committee.

 

Martha and her husband Barry have a daughter and a son.  Marissa graduated from USC, School of Annenberg Journalism and Communications Graduate program and is currently an adjunct Assistant Professor at USC. Ben attends California State University, Fullerton. Both graduates from Torrance Unified schools.
