Biography

I am a second-generation US citizen born in Los Angeles. My family immigrated to the US from Mexico to flee from extreme poverty. I was raised in a tough neighborhood in South Central LA, and my life is a testament to what hard work and perseverance can achieve.

I went to Cal State Polytechnic Pomona University and University of La Verne where I  earned a B.S. Degree in Organizational Management. I  credit free college tuition and affirmative action policies that allowed me to move to a higher socio-economic status.

I worked in a large technology firm for twenty years in a number of roles from Business Analyst to Project Management and now I work for the State of California as a Government Contract Analyst.

My family and I have lived in Upland for fifteen years where we raised two sons and I was an active member of the community over the years. My involvement has included being a PTA Board Member for our elementary school and a Band Mom for the High School Marching band, all while working a full-time job.

Over this past summer I was engaged in several governance and policy issues in the Upland City Council.

A few months ago, the City of Upland deliberated on and eventually voted in favor of filing an amicus brief against the California Values Act.  The hearing around this issue was filled with hate and divisiveness and was counter to any type of community-building.  This was my wake-up call to get involved in local politics.

I was also involved this summer in a successful fight to save the local community park from real estate developers (www.savecabrillopark.com). As a result of community engagement and mobilization, the park was saved.

Ultimately, these issues made me realize that our city is not responsive to the needs of my community. There are significant concerns around homelessness, crumbling infrastructure, public safety, and access to parks and open space. This eventually sparked the need for me to run for City Council in District 3.

I believe our community needs better engagement and representation from someone who is committed to bringing residents' voice to these issues and the City Council. I believe the skills and experiences I attained througout my professional career as an Analyst and problem solver can be utilized in local governance to help us move forward to a more prosperous and thriving community. I have a passion for bringing the community together and a proven track record of succussful advocacy for the diverse voices in my district.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

My political views are based on a committment to advocating for economic, social and environmental justice and always striving for a fair, just and equitable society. Regardless of party affiliation, we all agree on two things - we need to keep special interest money out of our political process, and we need to increase civic participation so that we have a more democratic and highly engaged society.

With regards to economics, we need to promote community development that prioritizes our local businesses over international chains that take their profits elsewhere. Additionally, I believe local municipalities need to advocate for a living wage. I am currently a union member and support and believe in labor causes.

With regards to social issues, I believe in creating an inclusive society where no matter your age, gender, economic standing, faith, color of your skin, who you choose to love, everyone is equally valued and needs to be heard. As a child of undocumented immigrants, we need to protect, respect and value the contributions of our immigrant community and value all of our wonderful diversity. We also need to empower our youth to be included in our decision-making as they will inherit what we implement today.

With regards to environmental issues, I believe we are living in a climate crisis and need to embrace renewable energy to reduce fossil fuel emissions. We need to improve our air quality and thus increase environmental protection standards. I believe firmly in preserving our green space as it offers a number of health, environmental and community-building benefits.
