My Top 3 Priorities

  • Smart investments in exceptional teaching faculty & support staff to insure high rate of student success.
  • Prudent fiscal management: maintain Triple A financial rating & 20% rainy-day fund, modernize campus facilities.
  • Support veterans & their families, strengthen diversity efforts to enrich educational experience for students & faculty.

After graduating from Williams College, I served as a Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer stationed at Pearl Harbor. I did my graduate work at UC Berkeley, supporting my young family as a jazz musician in San Francisco.

Then for 33 years I taught American Literature at SUNY Buffalo, New York State's flagship university campus.  During that time I served 5 years as department chair, and another 5 years as vice provost for faculty development.  So in addition to working closely with students, I have considerable experience as an administrator, managing budgets and dealing with personnel challenges.  I am currently a member of the MiraCosta College Board of Trustees.  I feel well qualified to continue in that role, where I am fully committed to working hard on behalf of the entire MiraCosta community: students, faculty, staff, and the people in the community who elected me.

I keep my life in balance as an active trombonist playing New Orleans traditional jazz in the SoCal area.

Political Philosophy

I press hard for board policies that emphasize smart investments in exceptional teaching faculty and support staff.  This is what guarentees the best educational outcome for MiraCosta students.  It's the key to helping students achieve the kind of academic success that leads to attractive job opportunies--especially for first-time and first-generation college students, and for those who come from financial hardship as so many do.

This investment makes up 80% of MiraCosta's annual budget. So it must be managed carefully.  Thanks to board leadership, MiraCosta's position has never been stronger.  The college has a Triple A financial rating, a 20%-plus Rainy-Day fund, and a $450 million capital investment to modernize and build out the college.

Here's the crux of my commitment to MiraCosta: opening up academic pathways that lead to success for ALL students--no matter their economic status, no matter their social circumstances, no matter their life situations and challenges.  The college thrives to the degree it embraces the principles of equity and diversity, advancing every student to successful academic completion and employment.

Military personnel and their dependents make up close to 10% of MiraCosta's student body.  As a veteran, I have strongly supported the creation and expansion of the college's Veterans Center.  Its dedicated staff is uniquely qualified to help military families meet the challenges they face when returning to school. I pledge to always be there for them.
