I am a retired Army Aviator. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Long Beach. I founded and ran a small business for over 30 years, before retiring in 2011.

I, along with my wife, Jeanne raised three daughters who all attended Oceanside schools, beginning in elementary, through high school. They all went to college and are successful in their careers. We now have two grandchildren who live in OUSD, one entering 3rd grade and one about to enter Kindergarten. I am worried for their educational success.

I am concerned how the reading, writing and math scores have dropped dramatically in the last few years. I wonder why there are no regular assessments to measure student growth in these core subject areas, as there were in the past.

Additionally, OUSD is one of several school districts in California under fiscal scrutiny, and is facing rising deficits in the next few years. This will definitely impact the education of all our children in OUSD.

And finally, I believe in providing both College and Vocational Pathways for our students, by partnering with local businesses as mentors, to provide additional opportunities for successful careers. These are most important for our students.
