Biography

I have lived in Fallbrook for 40 years and raised my 3 daughters here.  They all attended Fallbrook schools and received an excellent education. I have owned and operated my own business for 25 years, Patty de Jong Income Tax in the community.  I have volunteered countless hours to improving the lives of Fallbrook's youth.

What are the pressing problems of this school district, in your opinion, and what experience do you bring to the Board that will help address these problems?
Answer from Patty de Jong:

The main challenges facing our district are closing the achievement gap in learning and maintaining a non-deficit school budget while continuing to provide an excellent education for our students.  As a returning trustee, I bring a knowledge of the district's past challenges, what we have done to improve them and what we are striving towards for the future. During my tenure, we have maintained a good working relationship with our teachers and classified staff, are currently building a new school with Federal and State dollars (and little District money) and increasing test scores for ALL students.  I would like the opportunity to continue the exciting work happening within our District.

What is your view of charter schools?
Answer from Patty de Jong:

I am opposed to charter schools and will be until they have to meet the same strict standards that public schools must meet.

Should the district curb its school choice initiatives (for students who are not in charter schools), so that more students stay in their neighborhood schools? Why or why not?
Answer from Patty de Jong:

Fallbrook Elementary School District offers 2 school choice alternatives, a Dual Immersion school and a STEM Academy.  We encourage our students to attend their preferred choice of school, whether it be their neighborhood school or one of our specialized schools.

Are there school discipline strategies or behavioral support programs that you find appealing alternatives to exclusionary or punitive discipline? If so, which ones, and why?
Answer from Patty de Jong:

Our school district employs other discipline strategies instead of punitive discipline  Our expulsion rate is almost zero since we have implemented other more effective strategies.
