My Top 3 Priorities

  • Ensuring a high-quality education for every student
  • Providing a safe school environment
  • Closing the achievement gap in order to prepare students for college or a career pathway

Mount St. Mary's College, Los Angeles Certificate, Clear Crosscultural, Langusge and Academic Development (1995)
Mount St. Mary's Master of Science (M.S.), Administration of Schools (1990)
Cal State University Fullerton Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Biological Science (1986)

Born in Sumter, South Carolina on Shaw Air Force Base, I am the eldest of seven children. Attended elementary school in Baltimore, Maryland, grades 1-6. My family moved to California in 1966 and I started junior high school, 7th grade. The education system was two years behind Baltimore. In addition, California was more multi-cultural. As a result, I saw the opportunities and established myself as a good student.

I graduated with high honors from high school and received a four year academic scholarship to Cal State Fullerton (CSUF). After graduation, I taught science in a private high school for 7 years. In 1982, I married a wonderful man and we had two children. Being the first to go to college in my family, I wanted to succeed and so I chose to attend Mount Saint Mary's College for my Master's Degree and Teaching Credential while pregnant with my second son. After completing my Masters, I was hired to teach science at a public school and stayed for 19 years. In Eastvale since 2003, I was hired to teach science in the Riverside Unified School District middle school where I have been teaching for the past 15 years.

During my career as a classroom teacher, I have educated over 7,000 students. Outside of the classroom, I have many roles. I have been involved as a coach, Activities Director, Union Representative and past President of a Teacher's Association. I have also served in a variety of committees and organizations with the goal to inspire and prepare students to make a positive impact at home, school, and in their community.

Political Beliefs

Political Philosophy

Every child should have access to a quality education IN a safe school environment   Students should have the opportunity and guidance to succeed in fulfilling their dreams for a college or career pathway.   As an educator, I bring insight to the school board for what is truly needed in the classroom. I am experienced in private and public schools at the high and middle school levels.   Improving students literacy and mathematic skills is the main focus of Common Core.  Now schools are implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into the curriculum for all students K-12.  I am involved with NGSS implementation as a classroom science teacher and a California Teachers Association Liaison.   I believe in the inclusion of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) education.  It is vital in developing a well-rounded student.  VAPA education enhances the curriculum and creates an environment conducive to learning in a least restrictive manner.   I am a candidate with leadership, experience, and the commitment to working with all stakeholders inside and outside the classroom. Providing the opportunities and guidance for our children and their future is now!

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education." Martin Luther King, Jr.
