My Top 3 Priorities

  • Ensuring water rates and fees are fair: I will work to ensure the money we pay every month is not used for frivolous spending at WMWD. Our water rates and fees should pay for the cost of service and I will vigorously fight against further increases!
  • Board Meeting Accessibility: I commit to making WMWD Board meetings more accessible through the use of broadcasting/televising methods and utilization of evening meetings so customers do not have to take time off work just to stay engaged.
  • Customer and community engagement: I commit to communicating with customers in the division, continuing attendance at the community meetings, remaining accessible, responsive, listening to customer concerns and bringing customer issues to the Board.

Hello fellow WMWD customers, neighbors, friends and Division 2 voters. My name is Alan Shanahan and I am running for Western Municipal Water District Division 2 (WMWD) during the upcoming November election which is only 45 days away! I want to let you know first and foremost that, that my family and I are WMWD customers and I am the only candidate in the race who lives in a home serviced by WMWD. My family has experienced the same impacts from the recent rate increases and new Water Budget Tier system which we opposed in 2017.

I am in no way a politician. I have no desire to run for office beyond the WMWD board, I just want to make sure that as customers, we have a true advocate on the WMWD Board. I decided to run for the Board after myself and fellow customers learned that four of the five representatives on the Board, including our Division 2 rep, are not even customers of WMWD themselves. As customers, we should have elected officials on the WMWD board that feel the impact of their decisions and represent the interests of the customers they serve! I am involved in the community and attend local meetings regularly.

When elected, I commit to: communicating with customers in the division, continuing attendance at the community meetings, remaining accessible and responsive, listening to customer concerns, bringing customer issues to the Board and management, keeping customers informed about matters at WMWD and voting in a manner which reflects the best interest of the customers in the division. I will also ensure that WMWD representatives improve community engagement and customer education in water supply, operations, rates, conservation, rebates and resources available.

I have worked in the water sector for over 15 years. Specifically, I have worked for Metropolitan Water District (MET) which provides nearly all the treated water WMWD delivers to our homes. While at MWD I have worked in numerous fields including: IT, Operations, Maintenance, Water Quality, Supply, Treatment and Conveyance. Also during my time at MET I have been fortunate to work on and maintain the infrastructure which helps convey, store, treat and distribute the water which comes to our homes. I have worked on water quality systems including treatment, testing and regulatory compliance.

I believe that my vast experience at MET, being a WMWD customer and community involvement has given me the knowledge to make educated and informed decisions when it comes customer concerns, rates, safety and reliability of our water supplies. I can also assure you that I will advocate for more accessible meetings including, broadcasting and evening sessions so that we do not have to take time off work just to attend the meetings.

My family and I live in the Woodcrest area of Riverside, my wife is a Special Education Teacher and our children attend RUSD schools. Outside of work, I volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol as a Pilot Examiner and Treasurer and my son is also involved in the cadet squadron at March Air Reserve Base. Additionally, I also volunteer at the March Air Reserve Base Aero Club where active duty personnel and veterans can learn to fly. We also volunteer with Tri-Valley Riders where our daughter rides horses in gymkhana events at the Riverside Rancheros facility.

As you can see, I understand and share the same concerns as fellow WMWD customers have. My family and I believe in public service, love our community and believe in giving back. I hope that I can count on your support during the upcoming election in November, I will be in the 3rd position on the ballot.
