Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Stop the westside crime wave.
  • Pay attention to the budget. City Hall must stop using homeowners as its ATM.
  • Build more middle-income housing along transit corridors. The new homeowners will revitalize business districts and we'll create housing for our kids and grandkids.

Joel Engardio works for a company that makes health care more accessible and affordable. He also helped Stanford University’s Asian Liver Center raise awareness of a deadly but curable hepatitis B epidemic. At the American Civil Liberties Union, Joel found plaintiffs to present the most compelling cases for LGBT, immigrant and women’s rights.

Joel holds a Masters in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Trained in journalism, he has won multiple awards for his reports, essays and documentaries in national outlets like USA Today and PBS. Since 2013, he has written a prize-winning column for the San Francisco Examiner.

Joel serves on the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee and the executive boards of SF Moderates and the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club. He also served on the board of the Golden Gate Heights Neighborhood Association.

Joel married Lionel Hsu, a software engineer, the year the U.S. Supreme Court made their union legal nationwide. They own a home on San Francisco's westside. Joel grew up in Saginaw, Michigan and is a Michigan State graduate. He has completed seven marathons.

Filosofía política

The Democratic County Central Committee (DCCC) may be the city's most powerful organization that most people don't know.

The DCCC governs the Democratic Party in San Francisco. It endorses candidates and takes official positions on ballot measures. Those choices matter because many voters use the DCCC “slate card” as a guide in deciding how to vote.

Bottom line: the DCCC affects elections.

Joel Engardio is a passionate pragmatist, a liberal who gets things done. He believes that government works best when we carefully measure results and keep evidence ahead of ideology.

Joel Engardio recognizes that economic growth is the funding engine that can make possible excellent public education, universal health care, and affordable housing.

As a member of the DCCC, Joel doesn't just attend meetings and talk. He works to build a modern, vital Democratic Party in San Francisco.

Most candidates can't talk straight. Joel can't avoid talking straight because he's on the record in three years of San Francisco Examiner columns on local issues.
