Biografía

A lifelong Californian, I was born in San Diego and grew up on my parents' ranch in El Cajon.  I attended local public schools and graduated with high honors from the University of California, Riverside, and the University of San Diego School of Law, where I was a Law Review editor.  In 1979, I was selected as a California Senate Fellow; and for most of my career, I worked in the Capitol as an attorney for the Democratically controlled Senate.  Politics is my passion, and I have volunteered for Democratic candidates and progressive causes for more than 50 years.  Raised by Democratic parents who encouraged political discussion and participation, I have voted in every election since I registered immediately upon attaining eligibility.  I am a product of the kind of middle-class family that is disappearing from our country.  As a public servant, my father was able to provide a comfortable and enjoyable life for my two sisters and me. (My mother returned to part-time work after we were in high school.)  I want everyone to have the chance to achieve this type of happy and successful existence.

Filosofía política

My political philosophy is based on my beliefs in:

  1. The right of people to a decent life that includes not only adequate and affordable food,  shelter, healthcare, and education but also a pollution-free environment;
  2. The right of people to find employment that matches their skills, to work in safe conditions, to be paid a decent salary, to be protected from discrimination, and to have both reasonable job security and a secure retirement;
  3. The right of women to equal pay and reproductive choice;
  4. The right of people to easy access to registration and voting;
  5. The right of people to an unbiased criminal justice system;
  6. The right of all minorities to be accepted as equals in our society; and
  7. The obligation of all people to protect and honor the Earth and its non-human inhabitants so that future generations are able to enjoy its beauty and diversity.

I am a Democrat because I believe that our party is the best instrument for achieving these goals.
