Filosofía política

David Cook was elected to the Sonoma City Council in November 2012 and served as Mayor of Sonoma in 2015.  He is running for re-election this November on the Sonoma City Council for a final four year term. In the past four years, David never missed a Sonoma City Council meeting and has served with six different council members on the five member council. Throughout his time on the council he has served on many different committees and advisory boards.  He has shown exceptional leadership and knows how to work with others to get the job done.

His ability to work with others on both sides of the issues has earned him respect in our community by our residents, city staff, other elected officials and leaders in our community. He believes that citizens should be involved in their community and that is why he is running for re-election.

For the past 21 years he has lived and worked in Sonoma Valley. In 2003 he started a small vineyard management company. Cook Vineyard Management has become a successful business employing many locals. He is married to his wife Kiersten and they have two daughters aged 7 and 4 months old.

Priorities

  1. Budget- The city is in a unique time. Our city manager and city clerk are both retiring in the next few months.  I look forward to working with the new city manager to continue the success of a balanced budget without removing any important core services including public safety.  I strongly believe that government has the responsibility to be fiscally responsible and set money aside in reserves for the future.

  2.  Water- Most of the water that comes to Sonoma is from an aqueduct directly from the Russian River. Even though we have some wells in Sonoma that add to this supply, we rely mainly on the aqueduct. I strongly feel that we need to continue to search for ways to conserve this valuable resource. In the past four years, I am very proud of the work we have done at the local level on water conservation and will continue this effort in the next four years.

    .

  3. Affordable Housing- Sonoma like much of California is in a housing crisis. In the past four years I have seen Sonoma become more expensive for all walks of life. This is a challenging issue. As a leader I have called for the enforcement of illegal vacation rentals. I understand that the little things we do can help in big ways in the end. I would like to see more out of the box thinking that we have discussed at a local level to help keep our families and our work force living in Sonoma. It is important that local, county and state officials continue to work together to help solve this crisis.

  1.  City Character/Tourism- There is a balance between tourism and the hometown feel we take pride in as city residents. Understanding this balance at the local level will keep Sonoma a great place to live, raise a family and work. The revenue that the city receives from local taxes, mainly the TOT  (transient occupancy tax) and sales tax are a great benefit to the city. I believe the council has done a great job using these revenues to maintain and improve our infrastructure and public safety, along with supporting local programs by partnering with our non-profit organizations.

In the next four years Sonoma will be faced with many decisions that will have a direct influence on our way of life. It is important to have Council Members who understand these unique challenges and make the right decisions for the current residents of the City of Sonoma and for future generations to come.
