Re-Election Bio

I am seeking re-election because I understand how financially vulnerable the hospital is. This year the District will need to lease or sell the hospital. It has become obvious that our community cannot sustain a hospital on its own. Already, after a single generous benefactor gifted $15 million dollars to re-open the hospital, we are close to closing our doors yet again. Recently, Pipeline Corporation assumed administrative responsibility for hospital operations. They are our last hope. They have the expertise but is it too late? Will their efforts succeed where no one else has? Are they even prepared to make investments of their own? I think we will know soon enough.  


I believe that a hospital west of the Laguna and Hwy 101 and not on an earthquake fault is good for the West County and the County as a whole. That is why I ran four years ago. Our small hospital affords our patients a chance to be close enough for loved ones to visit. (Did you know that Sutter has a policy to move patients to other, more distant, Sutter hospitals when they don’t have the room?)


I voted to allow the hospital to re-open. Yes, I was more than a bit skeptical about our ability to find a sustainable funding solution, but when someone offers to pay ALL of the costs to bring back the hospital you give it try.  However, I made sure to I serve on the Management Services Agreement subcommittee because I knew it was critical to protect the citizens of our District from liability as we turned over the day-to-day hospital operations to a brand knew entity.


I am endorsed by all of my colleagues on the District Board. In fact, I believe that I am supported by all of the candidates here today. They may not always agree with me but they trust me. I do my homework and collaborate. I have served on many, many District committees: bankruptcy, strategic planning, audit, executive director search, employee benefits, etc. I am the current chair of the community services committee and also a past president of the District.


Since hospital closing it has been my role to engage the community about desired health services and then map a direction for implementing them.

West County healthcare professionals make up the bulk of the committee advisors and have helped design a program aimed specifically at helping our growing senior population. We currently provide monthly nail care, skin and depression checks, blood pressure screenings and more at both of our local senior centers. We have partnered with West County Health Centers to develop a program to increase and train west county caregivers. And we have been providing financial support to the Russian River Area Resources and Advocates to keep this critical monthly meeting alive.


I am devastated by the recent LAFCO decision to go forward with the detachment of the River Area. While I believe that they should be able to determine their destiny, this is the region that most needs an increase in health care opportunities. I also understand that sixteen years of District infighting is enough for anybody. But, the idea that we will really not be able to continue to build the community services in the River Area that we have be working on for the last two years saddens me greatly.


And, finally, a hospital in 2016 cannot legally or ethically function without a successful strategy to 1) prevent patients from being re-admitted to the hospital and 2) improve the health of our citizens. I am committed to the hospital and the hospital’s critical mission of keeping us out of the hospital!!


As usual much is in flux. A person would have to be crazy to run. I am crazy enough to know that I am beholden to no one at the hospital, I will never make any money from my relationships with the District or hospital and I will never approve new bonds.
