Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Educational equity
  • Board transparency
  • Teacher support

I have called Carpinteria home for nearly 30 years. Here, I've worked as a teacher, entrepreneur and journalist. I attended CUSD public schools and graduated from Carpinteria High School in 1994. I learned to love this gorgeous town by the sea from my mother's family, the Bailards, who have lived and farmed in the area since the 1860s. My mom, Mary Foley, taught in the Carpinteria public schools for many years and my dad, Paul Foley, was a dedicated public servant as a Carpinteria Unified School Board member and president.

As owner of Red Hen Cannery, I make and sell artisanal, small-batch jams and marmalades for hundreds of customers in California and beyond. My jams and marmalades are featured at nine stores across California and sold in four weekly, Santa Barbara County farmers markets. I am a sixth-generation California farmer who is proud of my Bailard Family pioneer heritage in Santa Barbara County.

My career has included work in journalism, teaching, and arts administration. I studied at the University of Exeter, in England, for a year, before completing a Bachelors of Art in Creative Writing at Kenyon College in Ohio and eventually earned a Masters of Fine Art in Prose at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. My writing has appeared in Wired Magazine, Santa Barbara Magazine, and many others, eventually editing the VC Reporter. I have also taught creative writing and visual art to hundreds of children at public schools through the Children's Creative Project in Santa Barbara County and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Teaching eventually led me to a job as an English Instructor at Lousiana State University, where I taught students English composition and literature. I now teach fifth grade art at Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara.

Filosofía política

Carpinteria’s public schools are poised to expand dynamically and I am committed to transforming thoughts into action, using my business skills. I will be a voice for parents, teachers and students to ensure that the district adopts new programs that are child-centered, academic and socially progressive, while maintaining fiscal responsibility. To implement changes, I will collaborate with teachers, listening to their needs and working together on various issues, for the benefit of students. Making teachers feel appreciated goes a long way towards helping them negotiate the intensity of working with students. As a teacher, I understand the needs of educators and how essential their support is to the district’s goals.
While listening to teachers is critical, I will also take time to engage with parents. As the mother of a four year-old, I understand how Carpinteria’s new generation of parents need innovative, dynamic, and socially-just programs. Most importantly, I will bring the school board’s attention back to children. As a graduate of Carpinteria’s public schools, I want to restore this school district to a high-functioning, creative school system that supports the needs of all students equally.
