Biografía

John was elected to the Board in Nov. 2004, the second openly-gay elected official in Santa Clara County. He is a teacher by profession, currently teaching fourth grade in south San Jose. He has taught elementary school since 1987. Prior to getting his teaching credential at Santa Clara University, he worked for Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County and the Oak Park Food Locker in Sacramento, as a member of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. He earned his bachelors in history and anthropology at the University of California Berkeley, in 1984.   John's interest on the Board is bringing the perspective of a classroom teacher to its work, always asking if the decisions of the board, in addition to helping students, are the best for the working conditions of teachers and staff. He has served on numerous board committees, currently working with staff in the areas of charter school oversight and the budget. He represents the District on the East Side Alliance Advisory Committee and on the Santa Clara County Commission on Intimate Partner Violence.   Additionally, John has represented Santa Clara County teachers on the CTA State Council of Education since 2006. He lives with his husband, Mark, and their extremely spoiled cat, Ashley.
