Profesión:Council Member, City of Santa Monica | Vice President, EVgo
Council Member, City of Santa Monica — Cargo elegido (2010–current)

Biografía

The co-founder of successful green businesses and an executive with the cutting edge electric car charging network company, EVgo, Terry has cultivated the tools to make our city the national standard for sustainability, human-scale neighborhoods, regional traffic solutions, and green jobs.  His BA in Public Policy from Stanford and MBA from UCLA have guided him to make responsible, informed decisions to balance the City’s budget, cut waste and protect the well-being of all residents – from cradle to career, and beyond.

In addition to serving on the City Council, Terry’s lifetime commitment to giving back to the community includes serving on the Advisory Boards of the Weingart Center Association Partners and Santa Monica College, the Board of the Coalition for Clean Air, and co-founding the Stanford Homelessness Action Coalition and the Human Rights Watch Young Advocates

Terry and his wife Tiffany live in the Pico neighborhood with their two daughters who are nine and eleven years old.

Terry O’Day. Protecting our Human Scale Neighborhoods – and Environment

A respected environmental leader who has worked both internationally and nationally, Terry has spearheaded the city’s cutting edge policies to protect our human scale neighborhoods and our planet. He helped create the City’s new strict, citywide height and density restrictions. He stopped a major out-of-state developer from ruining the character of the Sunset Park neighborhood. Even before other cities were confronting the drought, Terry led the Council to adopt a water self-sufficiency policy by 2020 and directed city staff to devise and prioritize air pollution reduction and legal strategies at Santa Monica Airport. He initiated a plan to update the Big Blue Bus fleet to Zero Carbon emissions by 2030.

Terry O’Day. REAL solutions to Traffic Reduction

Terry is leading regional efforts to find innovative solutions to get Santa Monica moving again. He was the co-founder of Move LA, an organization that devises strategies to reduce traffic regionally and create alternatives.  He helped bring the Expo Rail to Santa Monica, convinced the city to invest over $7 million in bike infrastructure and pedestrian improvements, including our new Breeze Bike Share program, and helped create the Santa Monica College’s partnership with Big Blue Bus and Safe Routes to School for Samohi. He helped impose the stiffest traffic restrictions on new development in city history, which have become a model for the region. In his next term, Terry hopes to bring to our city some of the innovative traffic abatement policies he learned on a recent international fact-finding trip in Europe.

Terry O’Day. Creating a lifetime of opportunities for every resident.

Terry believes that the Council’s first responsibility is keeping its residents safe – at home, in school and on our streets. He has always made sure our exceptional police, fire protection and 911 services continue to be the best in the state.

Terry believes the city must invest in all residents – from cradle to career and beyond. He has been one of the leading voices for protecting the city’s diversity and making Lifelong Learning top City Council priorities. Terry helped secure land and funding for an advanced early childhood center in Downtown Santa Monica. He has been a champion of our public schools – extending the city’s partnership with SMMUSD to prevent teacher layoffs and program cuts; championing Measures Y & YY to further protect our schools, and introducing the Youth Corps Eco-Leadership program in our schools. While he’s the youngest member of the City Council, Terry has been a leading advocate for improving services to seniors and the Emeritus College.

Terry O’Day.  A champion of renters’ rights.

Terry’s commitment to renters’ rights began decades ago when he worked with the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Today, Terry understands we need affordable rents – so that young adults who grew up here can afford to raise a family here, and so seniors can remain in their homes. He has worked tirelessly to protect renters from unfair treatment by landlords. He championed Measure RR to restrict evictions for cause and provide advanced protections for disabled renters. He was a leading voice to prevent evictions for smoking while protecting renters from harmful effects of second hand smoke. Terry understands that in this housing crisis, there is a growing need for affordable housing and creative live-work accommodations to get cars off the streets. To that end, Terry supported protecting affordable housing units in mixed use buildings on boulevards.
