My wife, Linda, and I have lived in the Palomar Health District for 27 years.  Our two daughters went through the schools in the district.

Growing up on a small farm in Michigan, we had neither health insurance nor the money to buy it.  Whenever I got sick, my grandmother gave me a hot totty (I didn't care for the taste, but after a few minutes, I didn't care).

Military service interrupted my undergraduate studies.  Afterwards I completed my Bachelor of Science (BS), and went on to obtain a Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in physics at Michigan State University.

The military exposed me to the benefits of a comprehensive healthcare approach.  For the first time I had easy access to healthcare - I could get medical help when needed.  I went to the dentist for the first time.  Military healthcare was a real eye opener and stirred my interest in healthcare policy.

My 30+ years in industry was primarily in aerospace as a scientist, manager, and director.  I also owned and was the managing partner of a small business.  My responsibilities over my career included not only technical tasks such as analyzing and optimizing information, sensors, and systems, but also project management, strategic planning, and financial modeling.

Although my talents are in the hard sciences, my wife is a registered nurse (neo-natal intensive care, advanced life support), so we talked a lot about Linda's job, healthcare, and healthcare policy at the dinner table.  Ultimately, both of our daughters ended up in the healthcare field, one is a cancer researcher at the Curie Institute (as is her husband), and our youngest is a clinical social worker (therapist) for Mental Health America in Long Beach.  For the past 26 years, Linda has worked at Pomerado Hospital, which is part of the Palomar Health system – so, much of our discussion over that time has been related to Palomar Health.

My long-time interest in healthcare, and the many discussions about Palomar Health with my wife, led me to start attending board meetings in 2012.  As a result, I have become very knowledgeable about many details of Palomar Health.  My longtime interest in healthcare policy and practice, and corporate experience, will bring a deep personal understanding of the need for access to healthcare to the board of directors, as well as much needed diversity and analytical capabilities.  If elected, I will re-focus Palomar Health on its mandated mission, vision, and values.
