My inspiration for running for the Kern High School Board of Trustees begins with my parent’s, Alex and Virginia Vasquez, legacy of giving back to their community. Both being former board members for the Fairfax School District, they instilled in me the belief that I should give back to our community in whatever capacity I was able to. I’ve carried that legacy of service with me throughout my 30+ years as an educator in the Kern High School District while working as a proud teacher, football coach, counselor, dean, assistant principal, district office director, and principal.
I’ve lived in East Bakersfield for my entire life, with the exception of my time in college, and I’m proud to call the eastside my home. My roots run deep in Trustee Area 2, whether it’s been working on behalf of students or taking part in the vibrant life of the community. Driving along College Ave, Bernard Street, Mt Vernon Ave, Niles Street, Fairfax Road, or California Ave feels like home to me, and I appreciate the energy and vitality of the people and students that make this a great community.
My childhood memories are of my elementary education in the Fairfax School District and playing baseball for the Fairfax Junior Baseball Club, a league that my father and mother helped start in the 60’s and which continues to serve thousands of kids to this day. I have great memories of my years as a Foothill Trojan and making my way through Foothill High with the help of great teachers and coaches. My memories of my Bakersfield College experience are of the friends I made who came from every corner of Kern County and beyond. Needless to say, my most vivid memories on my journey to adulthood are those associated with the teachers, counselors and administrators that gave me the opportunity to get a great education. During my years away from my community attending San Francisco State University, I always anticipated my return to Bakersfield and my roots.
