Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Make the best use of our resources, especially Measure N bond funds, to address enrollment growth, existing facilities needs, and a long-term solution for Bullis Charter School.
  • Attract and retain the best teachers by providing financial help, classroom support, and professional development opportunities.
  • Continue to improve the education program, and increase support for populations with persistent achievement gaps, to provide every student with a solid foundation and the chance to shine.

Biografía

My grandfather, Reynold B. Johnson, moved his family to Palo Alto in 1952 to start up IBM's West Coast Laboratory. After growing up on the east coast, I attended Stanford from 1992-1997, earning BS and MS degrees in Computer Science, later working for tech companies like Netscape (AOL) and Guidewire.

My wife, Jocelyn Goldfein, and I moved to Los Altos in 2006, and in 2007, I retired from the tech industry and became a stay-at-home dad for our two daughters. Since then I've been a dedicated volunteer in our community and our school.

My service includes:

  • Santa Rita PTA President, 2013-14

  • Santa Rita PTA Exec Board, 2012-2016

  • Measure N Bond Committee

  • Santa Rita School Site Committee

  • North Los Altos Concerned Neighbors

  • Community Center Alliance

Along the way, I helped hire Principal Greg Land for Santa Rita, pioneered a new fundraiser (the Read-a-thon), revamped the online store and have chaired many of the committees.

Through it all, volunteering for programs like Project Cornerstone, Science Olympiad, Living Classroom, and Junior Olympics has brought me into the classroom nearly every day for the last six years. Helping our kids and teachers has been incredibly rewarding, and I believe that my understanding of their on-the-ground experiences will help the school board make better use of our limited resources.

Filosofía política

I’m a retired software engineer, passionate about educating all of our kids and committed to making the best use of our limited resources.

Our schools are at a crossroads.

LASD voters passed a $150M facilities bond in November of 2014 to fund enrollment growth, overdue facilities upgrades for our nine campuses, and a long term home for Bullis Charter School. It’s time to move forward with a plan to spend the funds. If elected, I’ll work to present all feasible options to the community as soon as possible and deliver a comprehensive plan by the end of the school year.

Facilities are only one piece of the puzzle.

Los Altos has one of the best school districts in the state, but the high cost of living is an obstacle to attracting and retaining the best teachers. I’m committed to finding creative solutions, like initiatives to help teachers with down payments and student loan refinancing. This challenge is not unique to our district, so I’ll collaborate with surrounding districts and cities to share solutions. Our teachers also deserve high quality professional development to adopt the latest technology and adapt to changing standards and curriculums.

All students deserve the chance to excel.

Our international community brings students and parents speaking a wide variety of languages to our district. Economically disadvantaged students face more challenges than ever with costs of living continuing to rise. And there are still too many programs (especially music, drama, and the arts) that have not been fully restored from the cuts made in the last recession. Our community’s resources should be allocated towards providing every student with a solid foundation and the chance to shine.

I will work tirelessly for our children and our community.

Volunteering at Santa Rita has brought me into daily contact with teachers and students for the last six years. If elected, I will make sure the school board’s plans are grounded in the day to day lives of teachers, students, and families.
