Biografía

Wendy Carrillo escaped El Salvador’s brutal civil war and took refuge in the U.S. when she was 5 years old. Like many children that flee violence in Central America, she was undocumented until she was 13.

Wendy’s mother is a certified nursing assistant with SEIU 2015 and her father is a supervisor at the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. Her parents taught her the importance of an education and encouraged her drive and strong work ethic. They also taught her the importance of compassion and resiliency. She became a naturalized citizen by her 21st birthday and for a few years was the only member of her family of seven who could vote. She is the eldest of five daughters and set an example for them as a first-generation college student.

Wendy is a proud graduate of the 34th District’s public schools: Harrison Elementary School in City Terrace, El Sereno Middle School in El Sereno and Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights. While juggling multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet, Wendy attended East LA College and received a Bachelor’s in Rhetorical Communications from California State University Los Angeles. She also earned a Master’s in Specialized Journalism with an emphasis in demography and politics from the University of Southern California.

Wendy recently moved from Highland Park to Boyle Heights where she fulfilled her dream and bought a home, just blocks where she first lived when she arrived in Los Angeles as a child. And today, she is running for Congress.
