Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Picking a superintendent is the most important decision that our School Board will make. We must be careful and deliberate in this search, as selecting the right candidate will be instrumental to this district's schools continued success.
  • Tightly manage the district budget. Because school districts now have to provide more money to the state, managing the budget is more important than ever.
  • Continue to support the district’s innovative educational philosophy. We must keep an eye towards competing in the global economy, and recognize that our children’s future might look very different from what we have experienced in our lifetime.

I’m Thomas Vigdal and I’d be honored to serve our district as San Carlos School Board Trustee. I have lived in San Carlos since 2010 with my wife Amanda and we’re raising a boy and a girl, one just starting 1st grade at Arundel and the other in her last year of San Carlos School District Preschool.

I have years of experience advising and setting policies at Apple, where I work as a lawyer. I’ve worked with tight budgets, difficult choices, and high expectations to deliver results to my clients. I know how to listen carefully, appropriately balance benefits and risks, and make challenging decisions with both short-term and long-term goals in mind.

During college and graduate school, I also was fortunate to be in a position to mentor and teach those around me. During my time at Iowa State University, where I received a degree in Genetics and a Masters in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, I was both a teaching assistant and a mentor for students in genetics and chemistry. I continued teaching and mentoring while working on my degrees at both Stanford and Davis.

Growing up the youngest of three children to a single mother taught me many things. It taught me the importance of education and its ability to lift and provide students with opportunities. It taught me the incredible sacrifices and hardships a parent will endure in order to better the lives of their children. But it also taught me that there are a lot of families who are so busy and so committed to other necessary tasks, that they don’t always have the time to research and stay abreast of every school issue. Because of this, I believe our schools need to focus on three things: ensure the voices of our community are heard by the District and schools, manage the budget to ensure the safe expansion of our schools, and develop a metric to measure the progress of our schools so that we can ensure our kids will compete in the global economy.

I’m running for San Carlos School Board Trustee because I want to get involved however I can. The 2016 presidential election did not sit well with me, and I’ve realized that there is no longer room for me to stand on the sidelines. It’s time for me to step up and find ways to help wherever I can.
