Biografía

Tom Ferrara has always had a passion for justice and for the law enforcement profession.

He knew at a young age that he wanted to pursue a career as a peace officer and fight to protect those who could not fight for themselves. He followed that dream and through a career of hard work and dedication to public service, he has had the privilege to serve as your Sheriff.

Tom began his career as a police cadet with the Rio Vista Police Department. While working full time, he attended night and weekend classes at San Joaquin Delta Community College’s basic academy. Upon graduation, his first assignment was as a reserve police officer with the City of Rio Vista. Tom would then, move onto the Isleton Police Department and later to Solano County as a deputy sheriff, where he was hired by former Sheriff Al Cardoza. Tom values the relationship he had with Sheriff Cardoza and is proud to have served under him.

Throughout his career at the Solano County Sheriff’s Office, Tom has held a variety of crucial positions, including patrol deputy, field training officer, background investigator, and civil deputy. Tom was selected to be the first line-level deputy sheriff to serve as the sheriff’s public information officer. Later in his career, he assisted in the merger of the Vallejo Marshal’s Office with the Sheriff’s Office.

In his next assignment, Tom worked to improve community safety in the county during his command of the Public Safety Division. He would serve roles as Custody Division Commander and later as Undersheriff, where he served until his appointment as Sheriff.

In 2012, because of his outstanding record and close ties with the community, retiring Sheriff Gary Stanton recommended to the Solano County Board of Supervisors that Tom succeed him as sheriff. Subsequently, Tom was confirmed and appointed in a unanimous vote by that board. Tom has served as Solano County Sheriff since then. In 2014 Tom ran for his seat without opposition.

Sheriff Ferrara holds an Associate’s degree in the Administration of Justice from San Joaquin Delta College, as well as a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Training and Development from Southern Illinois University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy’s 205th Session.

Sheriff Ferrara holds numerous certificates from the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training. He holds a certificate in Community Policing and has completed the Kerr-Hill Management Training Course, as well as the Quantum Leap Leadership Training Academy and the Josephson School of Ethics where he was certified as an ethics instructor.

When Tom is not working to make Solano a safer place, he is spending time with his family in Vacaville where he lives with his wife Judi and their blended family; children: Cassondra (Sonny), Scott, Jaycie, Nicholas, and Holden and their two four legged fur babies Charli the cat and Georgia, an English
