Biografía

Syda graduated from UC Santa Cruz and UC Hastings School of Law.  Syda's legal career spans 23 years.  In addition to jobs at the state Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, she has worked for a domestic violence agency and private law firms.  She also has operated her own law practice.  She has litigated in courts all around the state.  She knows criminal law, family law, juvenile law, and civil law.

Syda has gained valuable experience running her own courtroom by serving as judge pro tem.  She presides over traffic trials and arraignments as well as small claims trials.  She is efficient,  ensures that litigants feel that they were heard, and clearly explains the law and her decisions.  She promotes respect for the judicial system while making people feel comfortable in her courtroom.

Syda is a past president of Women Lawyers of Santa Cruz County and a high school mock trial coach.  For the past 12 years, Syda has taught and mentored law students at Monterey College of Law, which serves as a community law school for Santa Cruz County.  She volunteers in local schools with the Elementary Law Program.  She enjoys helping young people understand the judicial system and learn how to speak up for themselves in court.

Syda's endorsements include the Democratic Women's Club of Santa Cruz County, State Senator Bill Monning, Assemblymembers Mark Stone and Anna Caballero, and many local leaders including mayors, supervisors, and city councilmembers.

Creencias poliza

Filosofía política

Syda understands the importance of having smart, independent, and ethical judges who make carefully considered decisions that promote justice and reach common-sense results.

Syda knows that the decisions of a Superior Court judge can have deep impacts, whether for just one individual or for the entire community.

Syda strongly believes that everyone who appears in court deserves their cases to be decided by a well-prepared, thoughtful judge who understands the law and the consequences of his or her decision.

Syda understands that safety is a priority to the community and that the justice system has a responsibility not only to get violent criminals off the street, but to find effective alternatives to incarceration for non-violent offenders that will end revolving-door crime.
