Momentum: The Responsibility Paradigm and Virtuous Cycles of Change in College and Universities

Efforts to transform higher education have become a hyper-active cottage industry of reformers and influencers.  The common element is a theme of accountability—specifically, “being held accountable.”  The ubiquitous use of the verb “to hold” is not circumstantial. The obligation must be imposed—the individual must explain him or herself, the organization needs to be answerable for its actions.  

This book takes a decidedly different approach to mending the breach between what we perceive we do and how others perceive us.  That approach emerges from another phrase that involves “demonstrating responsibility” where responsibility is defined as, “The obligation to carry forward an assigned task to a successful conclusion.” 

We don’t need to be held accountable. We don’t need to be transformed.  We don’t need to be “fixed.”  What we need is to become responsible for creating our own future. 

The paradigm shift from “being held accountable” to one in which institutions work hard to “demonstrate their responsibility” requires specific prescriptions—that is, ways to operationalize the change. We need tools.  As Ellen Chaffee, a former college president and now senior fellow at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, has remarked, “We don’t need a bunch of solutions from outsiders.  We need a bunch of tools for people to find their own solutions.”

 

 

Demonstrating Responsibility (paradigm) + Virtuous Cycles (tool) = Momentum

 

The tool advanced in this book is the “virtuous cycle.” A virtuous cycle is a reinforcing loop that is an engine of learning and growth.  Real, long-term success is not a series of random events.  Instead, one success becomes the platform for future successes.  Confidence is gained, information is shared, and positive feedback begins to build on itself.  Such virtuous cycles or upward spirals have very specific characteristics, and these dynamics can be used to alter the trajectory of systems. 

The arc of a college or university, then, can be “designed in” by being intentional about the use of virtuous cycle dynamics.     

This is a purposeful approach to change, an algorithm for success:  Take control of the narrative by eschewing reactivity and victimhood and then embracing a positivity tool that is capable of producing success after success . . .  Momentum.
