Filosofía política

I served eight years as a navy nuclear power plant instructor and reactor plant and engine room supervisor on board an Ohio Class ballistic missile submarine, where I took to heart the need for transparent decision-making, as well as taking personal responsibility for those decisions. During this time I earned two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and a variety of commendations during my 11 tours at sea.

After serving, I returned to Visalia, where I attended College of the Sequoias, and volunteered as a local school librarian. I have been an Instructional Technology Specialist for Tulare County Office of Education for the last 17 years, bringing stakeholders together across county offices in order to create a variety of successful educational websites that continue to serve educators across California and our great nation. In this role, I have personally seen the excitement students get when provided hands-on educationally rich opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics. I will continue to pursue partnerships between the City, Visalia Unified School District, and our many after-school programs in order to provide those opportunities to families in an affordable manner.

I am currently serving my second term as Vice-Chair of the Visalia Parks and Recreation Commission, where I have taken a hands-on approach. I have helped to update Visalia’s parks and trailways ordinances and provided active input on Visalia’s Active Transportation Plan, potential future aquatic center, and development of a southside community center. I take great pride in having stood alongside our mayor and City Council in dedicating Miki Park, in honor of our sister city in Japan.

As the Commission’s liaison to the Visalia Parks and Recreation Foundation, I have personally assisted with a variety of Foundation events, and in leading the development of a forthcoming annual parks awareness celebration and fundraiser.

Our retiring mayor should be proud of the service he has provided to both City Council District 3 and to our city. It is my intention to continue Mayor Gubler’s legacy of listening to all sides and working diligently to bring people together in finding solutions to the challenges ahead. In addition, I have plans to push our leadership to take advantage of the technologies that currently exist in order to hear all of Visalia’s voices.

Through text message based surveys and web-based information streams, through more robust mobile applications, it is my hope that across District 3 and all of Visalia, more input and transparency can be provided, particularly with so many important decisions ahead. I will work each and every day to find a way to engage citizens, regardless of age or political affiliation, with the decision-making center of our community.

We should not only see ourselves as living in Visalia. It’s time we see Visalia as a way of life.
