Mis 3 prioridades principales

  • Use parent and teacher input to guide district decision-making, creating improved parent engagement and teacher morale.
  • Hire a new superintendent who is responsive to district needs and accessible to all stakeholders (current superintendent is retiring this school year).
  • Support student populations who require extra help in meeting standards.

Biografía

I have been a resident of Rincon Valley for 12 years, and this is my 11th continuous year with a student attending RVUSD. I am the mother of 5, and my 2 youngest children attend Austin Creek in Kindergarten and 4th grade. Since my children have started school, I have dedicated myself to volunteering at their schools. I currently volunteer in the Kindergarten classroom, the school library, and at Maria Carrillo High School, raising funds and supporting their music program. I am very active in my church community and volunteer a week each summer as the camp counselor to 20-30 teenage girls from across Santa Rosa.

Before I had children, I earned my masters degree in Education and worked a number of jobs in urban districts (Boston and Philadelphia). The main challenge we had there (the disparity of academic success between different groups of children) is now very prevalent in our district.

I am a staunch believer in the importance of arts in education. I am a pianist and dancer, and I have a history in children's theater. Every child needs exposure to the arts, and the chance to express themselves. Moreover, in a district with multiple languages spoken, art and music can serve as a universal language that helps each child feel understood and part of a greater community.

Filosofía política

School Board positions are non-partisan. As such, I do not approach this election with political positions, rather, I approach it as an advocate for public education, specifically for the 3500+ students who attend schools in our district. As a School Board Trustee, I will represent the voters, counsel with the teachers, and advocate for the students who attend our schools. I believe parent engagement is a critical component to successful schools. One of the School Board's most important tasks is to hire the Superintendent and this is one of my main motivators for running. We need to find a leader who is inclusive with all the stakeholders in our district: parents, teachers, administrators, staff, and students. Since our Superintendent left his position earlier this month, the search for a replacement is pressing. This is a great opportunity to start repairing morale in our district.

Currently,  only 1/5 Board Members has children attending school in RVUSD. While I do not think that every Trustee needs to be a current parent, I do believe that ratio needs correction. We need more parents on the School Board. My daily presence on school campus not only informs my perspective of how our district is running, it also improves the general school community's sense of accessibility to the School Board.
