Biografía

Hi my name is Esteban Balderas I'm a landscaper for MCCS Camp Pendleton, I've worked there for almost 10 years. It's an amazing hard job but I enjoy the challenges, I am also a proud father of a 16 year old boy. He currently attends Oceanside High School and is enrolled in the JROTC program.

As a father I have always worked hard to help my son not only at home but in his schools. I was a volunteer and a Fundraiser at my son's school, I was also the President for the Jefferson Parents Group. When Jefferson was going to be taken over by a Orange County Charter School, my son and I were there to fight for what was right for the staff, students and community.  By doing so we were able to help save many jobs for Classified, Certificated and the best part a school for our kids.

Preguntas y Respuestas

Preguntas de The League of Women Voters North County San Diego (4)

What are the pressing problems of this school district, in your opinion, and what experience do you bring to the Board that will help address these problems?
Respuesta de Esteban Balderas:

I believe there is not enough Parent and Community Voice for District 1. I have been involved in District 1 schools for the past 7 years, as my son has attended Oceanside schools. I've been a Parent Group President and Parent Advocate as well have helped with school fundraisers supporting staff and student programs.

What is your view of charter schools?
Respuesta de Esteban Balderas:

It's my opinion that children in our community should attend Public School's not Charter schools. We have some amazing programs in our schools in Oceanside. Some working with Steam(Science,Technology, Engineering, & Math) programs, another working with Dual Language Arts and Science. We want to make sure the children in our community's get the best education in public schools.

Should the district curb its school choice initiatives (for students who are not in charter schools), so that more students stay in their neighborhood schools? Why or why not?
Respuesta de Esteban Balderas:

Like stated in my previous answer, we have many specialty programs at different schools in our District, Parent and Children can choose what program and schools best fits there child strengths. I would like them to stay in there neighborhood schools but we all have a choice.

Are there school discipline strategies or behavioral support programs that you find appealing alternatives to exclusionary or punitive discipline? If so, which ones, and why?
Respuesta de Esteban Balderas:

The current programs that we have is a Progressive Discipline Program. Misbehaved students who do not follow the rules are counseled by the Administration as well as the Guidance Counselors. Meetings are set up with parent and staff to make a joint plan to make sure the offense does not reoccur and the student finds success at school. In extreme cases some students are sent to an alternative school location in order to receive individualized tutoring and counseling, this steps will hopefully stop the problem and suspensions. By doing this steps the suspension does not go on the students record.
