Preguntas y Respuestas

Preguntas de The League of Women Voters San Diego (4)

What are the pressing problems of this school district, in your opinion, and what experience do you bring to the Board that will help address these problems?
Respuesta de Timothy Shaw:

The most pressing problems in the Lemon Grove School District  would be budget, test scores, and student attendance.  With my years of experience, I have learned that school boards must learn to be fiscally conservative.  The majority of school districts budgets are for staff salary and benefits. School districts because of limited funding must prioritize times to purchase new text books, computers and computer equipment.  The Lemon Grove School District was able to modernized our schools through the use of the public votes of school bonds.

Test scores and student attendance are connected to parental involvement. As a district, Lemon Grove School District , has reached out to parents through Parents Teacher Association (PTA) to get more parents envolved and have encouraged parents to get involved in their local school councils, and to attend school board meeting. In addition, Lemon Grove School District has held workshops for parents to get a greater understanding of the need for partnerships between families and schools.

What is your view of charter schools?
Respuesta de Timothy Shaw:

It is my opinion that most charter schools are created to meet the needs of students who may not desire to attend public schools or who have not have the desired success when attending public schools.  I serve on the board of the Lemon Grove School District and I work for the San Diego Unified School District. I believe in public education and that families must decide what type of school works for them and their children.

Should the district curb its school choice initiatives (for students who are not in charter schools), so that more students stay in their neighborhood schools? Why or why not?
Respuesta de Timothy Shaw:

I believe in neighborhood schools; my children all attended schools in the Lemon Grove School District and have all become successful in their own chosen fields. In the Lemon Grove School District as well as other districts, school choice is offered; in many cases students and families have opportunities to attend their neighborhood schools as well as getting intradistrict transferrs.

Are there school discipline strategies or behavioral support programs that you find appealing alternatives to exclusionary or punitive discipline? If so, which ones, and why?
Respuesta de Timothy Shaw:

In the past years the Lemon Grove School District has used the methods of Restorative Justice.  Students and families are give the opportunties to discuss the issues and develop plans to before returning to the classroom; a period of reflexion instead of being suspended. In addition, counseling is used; talk to students and if needed outside agencies are used when the issues are greater than a school counselor are trained.

Filosofía política

I am a registered democrat, however, I am an independent voter; I vote according for the candidates who I believe would best serve the needs of Lemon Grove, California, and the United States. My vote on issues are read from all perspectives before casting my vote. As a school board member for the Lemon Grove School District, my primary job is to do what is right for the benefit of the students of Lemon Grove. I also represent the families of Lemon Grove and vote based on the needs of the families of the Lemon Grove School District. In addition, we want the best staff: teachers, administrators, custodians, secretaries food service, and classroom classifieds. The families and staff of Lemon Grove want the students of Lemon Grove to be safe and to feel safe on our campuses. As a board member is my job to make sure that our budget is balanced and that we spend our funds responsibly.

In the years that I have been on the school board of Lemon Grove, we have successfully past two school bonds with the purpose of modernizing our schools, to bring our school into the 21st century technically, and to prove the city and school district, with a library. To ensure proper spending, an oversight committee was formed and has continued to serve to assure that funding is spent in the manner that was voted.

As a member of the Lemon Grove School Board, it is my job to serve the needs of the students, families, and staff of the Lemon Grove School District.
