Where does the district go from here?

Summary

What does the future hold for Mosquito Fire Protection District.  I believe the district has three paths: more revenue for operations, join forces with another fire protection district or keep the services at the historic levels of service.

For the short two years I have served as a district director.  I have come to understand the community is growing and changing. More families enjoying the Mosquito Swansboro Country area.  Young families moving to an area of affordable rural homes with the necessary commute to jobs outside our community.

The former volunteer nature of our fire department staffing is rapidly becomming a dinosaur.  You can't be working outside the community and serve the needs of fire and emergency services in the district at the same time. Fires start day and night.  Past practices relied on volunteers and a minimual daytime staff. Some say that worked in the past and we should continue to do so. I believe the current fire fighting training prevent that being a viable option going forward. Volunteers need to train and perform to the the same level as paid professionals.

Providing for the daytime eight hours a day seven days a week we currently provide and maintaing equipment to meet safety requirements has already pushed our expenses beyong our supporting revenues.

As a retired successful businesswoman, I will use my business experience and financial abilities to serve the Mosquito Fire Protection District voters, staff, and community.  A year-round district resident since 1993, I understand and appreciate the uniqueness of our community. I will strive to keep this while giving the best fire and emergency services to district residents.
